Dynamic listening devices designed and constructed by sound collaborator Cal Fish will be used throughout the dance. Through their magic, the ground and air become sources of sound and amplification. In real time, music is cultivated by performers, Bree Breeden, Jose Lapaz-Rodriguez, Kyle Marshall, Nik Owens and Cayleen Del Rosario. Ruin will have costumes, hair and make-up designed by KMC visual director Edo Tastic, costume construction by Meagan Woods, with lighting by Itohan Edoloyi. In this dance, we reflect on the artifacts of our actions. Through acknowledging these echoes of history, we reckon with the syncopation of our modern lives and the dynamic cycles of human civilization. Ruin was commissioned by the Philadelphia Museum of Art for Matisse in the 1930s. Through the setting of improvisational scores, character embodiment, and flowing phrase work, Onyx reflects on the fame, influence, appropriation and erasure that riddles the legacy of so many Black and Brown artists. Through this embodiment of history, Onyx serves to recognize and celebrate these groundbreaking musicians while widening our perspective of the Black American cultural experience.&nbsp; Initial research for this project was supported by a 2021 Caroline A. Hearst Choreography Fellowship from Princeton University. Onyx is co-commissioned by DanceNow, the American Dance Festival, The Joyce Theater, and ADF with support from the Doris Duke/SHS Foundations Award for New Works. Onyx will premiere at Virginia Commonwealth University on October 1st, 2022. As a member of the diaspora, born and raised in the United States, I have felt a disconnect from my maternal homeland. This process has led me towards discovering my family’s migration story, learning about Carribean dance and historical research, and uncovering the global cultural impact of this mighty Carribean island.
